Message: Good afternoon. My name is Tony Gardner. I am a US Army Veteran, a life member of the American Legion, DAV, and VFW. I am the former Commander of Gower American Legion Post #393, in Gower Missouri and currently serving as the Adjutant for the post. I live in Odessa Missouri. In April of 2019 The Missouri Veterans Suicide Prevention Team was born. The team is led by Jon Sabala CPS, Veterans Service Director for the Missouri Dept of Mental Health. Our team of volunteers provides FREE QPR (Question Persuade and Refer) suicide prevention classes across the state of Missouri. We call the people we train Gatekeepers. Gatekeepers are people in your community that are trained to recognize a person in crisis, Question them about their crisis, Persuade them to get help, and Refer them to resources that can help them. Training takes 1 to 2 hours. In Missouri alone for 2019, 188 veterans, and a total of 1103 people died by suicide. In The US the number of people that die by suicide every day could fill a 737. We don't hear about them, and we don't think about them unless it personally affects us. Imagine how horrible it would be if a 737 full of people crashed at KCI today, and every day for the rest of the year. Most of those deaths could have been prevented if someone had been able to recognize the signs. QPR is to Suicide equal to what CPR is to a person suffering a heart attack. The more people trained, the more people that we can save. I would like to see each district offer this training in the next 6 months, with the hope that a majority of posts will decide to host this training for their community in the next 6 to 24 months. I will go anywhere to provide this training, all I ask is that someone contact me and be willing to listen. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, Tony Gardner
